Last year my carrots in the ground were got at by the evil fly.
This year I decided to lift a few above the flight path of the little monsters and grow some in pots above ground level.
I pulled the first one today as a trial and this is the result.

Just two carrots in this short pot. I have some in taller pots which I am hoping will be longer.

I pulled at the tops and they broke before the carrot lifted

It finally gave up the fight and submitted to my assault.

Out of the pot I see we have a cross legged carrot but looking healthy.

After a wash there is no sign of any attack from nasties.. this is what I wanted..A good clean veg and just about enough to give us both one of our daily five in one meal.

Next target is this pot I have hung on the wall.

Smashing carrot capney, dug a similar cross legged parsnip yesterday, wish i'd taken a pic, we could get a silly shaped veg thread going.

I don't bother growing carrots in the ground - the fly just destroys them. I'm surrounded by carrot fields, they seem to manage fine, and carrots are very cheap.
I grow a few carrots in pots just to get fingerlings and they do well.
I know the conventional wisdom says no need to feed or water carrots but I find the pots which are fed and well watered do best.

You know, I've never ever had a problem with carrot fly, either in the ground or in the pots.

I still grow most of my carrots in big troughs though. Early 'bunching' varieties are best, for nice sweet baby roots. Won't win any prizes down the village show, but taste good.

Pulled my second potted carrot this morning.
    Better than the first.
That will go well with fresh runners new potatoes and some beef for todays dinner.

Carrot number three todayfrom the pot, and a loverly one it is to.
For me, this is as good as it gets.

It did not give up without a strugggle
    [IMG]

But when it showed it looked so promishing

And from right to bottom of the pot.

    Hey Capney,

Good size there. Haven't lifted any more of mine since the first one resembled a small beetroot.
