    Hi Folks,

My instructions for potting on festuca read ...

But as this is the first thing I will be potting on I don't know how many blades of grass to put into each pot. Can anyone help please?

It's not what I would do aunt pol. I would pot on individually as any other plant onto trays and then pots. They grow quickly enough. I sow hordeum jubatum this way and get strong plants in first year

Thanks for that Verdun .. had to look up Hordeum Jubatum lol

The Festuca germinated 2 weeks ago and is now about 3 to 4 inches high and I'm not sure whether to pot on now or wait another week or so

Pot on now into 9 cm pots. Keep growth vigorous. Pot on again when roots are showing. Plant out when good size plants in mid spring. Hordeum jubatum is lovely. A short lived grass really but it's plumes are like stipa Tennuissima but with subtle purple, pink and other hues. Lovely billowing in sunshine

      Thanks again Verdun

Does that mean that each tiny blade that I have now will grow into a bushy plant?

Personally I would pot on in little clumps of 6 to 8, it would take you ages to seperate out all the seperate seedlings. I would also put three or more clumps together in each pot. That way you get a nice bushy plant in the first season.

      Thanks for that John

You know what - I have so many seedlings come through I might try both methods and see what happens. I'm keeping a diary so I'll put the details up at some point in the future.

Aunt pol, that makes sense. I have never liked plantIng seedlings in groups, whatever they are....sweet peas, ageratum, grasses....preferring to see them growing one at a time. Once grew campulas from seed....supposed to have been blue. I had lovely clump of blue with white mixed in. Did not like it. Often, too, seedlings are slightly different....foliage more green than blue for example with festucas and the effect is spoiled. Let us know how ŷou get on...we can learn together

      Hi again Verdun,

Well doing it both ways will be a good experiment. I am also growing two varieties of campanula - carpatica and a bush variety.

I am keeping diaries on everything so that I can put them online at a later date, so will indeed let you know

Ok, I've potted on the festuca but there were so many that had germinated I ended up with 24 pots of 5 each and still half a tray left over.

Over a part of the vermiculite there was a sort of clear fungus or moss - a little worrying as I have no idea what it is

Was vermiculite damp? Maybe open bag and disturb contents. Maybe it will disappear then
