Has anyone had any experience with them? I couldn't resist picking up a pack each of 'Stuttergarter' & 'Red Baron' at only a pound each :rolleyespink:

Some are tiny though (no bigger than the tip of my pinky!) will they catch up to the larger ones?

Hi IceCold, I can't comment specifically on Onions but I've found Poundland bulbs, plants etc to be very good quality.
Let us know how you get on :)

We have grown both of these varieties although we found the red ones didn't keep well in storage. We always buy our onion sets from the garden centre as they always seem bigger bulbs although we do get the odd small one in the pack and I still plant them.

I read somewhere once that to get bigger onions you need to space them further apart from each other and the individual set grows to the space it has got but don't know if that is an old wives tale or not.

I have always used Wilkos onion sets , about £1.50 for a large bag (250gm I think ). Never had one problem with them . I grew Stuttergarter two seasons ago a lovely mild onion . May be a bit early for Wilkos to stock them yet.

They reduce in size if planted less than the ideal distance apart, but don't grow into giant onions if planted at greater distances, so I plant at 25/30mm centres both ways for spring onions, also plant surplus leeks at close centres for mini-leeks, and sunflowers 5 to a 70mm pot to stunt their growth to make smaller cutting flowers.

Something put me off Poundland onions a few years ago, but can't remember what it was. Morrisons onion setts have previously been a good price and decent size, and I've found small fiddly setts produce smaller onions, so best to go for decent size ones and spend a little bit more to get a much bigger crop for the same amount of watering, weeding, etc.

I've only ever grown Onions from seed with varying results! Some grow to a good size but many are quite small. Reading about Onion sets I think I might give them a go as well as some from seed. I don't have a Wilkos anywhere close but do have a Morrisons. Can you remember @Scrungee when Morrisons be get theirs in to sell?

Lovely set of onions there Zigs :blue thumb: There is just something so wholesome about onions . Their shape , the colouring and especially the taste and texture . I think onions are the only vegetable that are used in all cooking styles , from the artic to the equator . ( don't quote me on this one , not 100% sure  )
