They cannot be that bad. The parts are assembled in a calm, controlled environment, properly finished and made resilient, whilst outdoors a building site would suffer the effects of unkind weather and more mess and disorganisation, in general.

They can be assembled at the most convenient time.

What are your thought about it?

The trouble is the majority of them look like chicken coops, without any character, although there are the exceptions they are the exceptions.

Well my parents had one just after the war and thought the world of it. But I guess you are talking about some modern version?

We still have a few prefabs in my neighbourhood, left over from WW2 when the germans kept missing the nearby works and wiping out the neighbourhood instead.

In fact the church hall next door to me is a prefab.

I hate to say it, but its as ugly as sin, and there'd be no way they'd get planning permission for it if it wasn't already there and they wanted to build it now.

When you need to replace homes and community halls as fast as a hostile force can destroy them, prefabs are the way to do it because they are very quick to assemble compared to building a proper building.

I read an article which was mentioning a couple of architects with not so exciting websites and this German company:

Prefabs are alive and well - only these days they're called 'mobile homes' (even if they are incapable of moving an inch).

Yes, as there is a housing shortage now, just as there was when JWK's parents needed accomodation. So surely with modern materials & techniques it should be possible to build 'nice pre-fab homes' on so much on the derelict and disused land which can be seen in many of our town and cities.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that one. Static caravans (mobile homes) are indeed prefabs, and they are also very nice.

The word 'prefab' to me conjures up images of concrete slabs slotted together to make a sort of large concrete shoe box.
