I took this picture a few days ago at Inverewe however I don't know what tree it's from... I originally thought it was a Particularly good form of Cercidiphyllum japonicum however the leaf shape is all wrong and I don't remember the prominent burnt sugar smell (was on one of my ID off days:hehe:)

unfortunately this is the only picture I have and I can't remember how big the tree (or shrub?) was or what the bark looked like:dh:

Hi there my IoW friend ... haven't seen you around much.

I would agree with your first thought of the Cercidiphyllum japonicum, the Katsura Tree, which can often emit the scent of burnt sugar. It has a resemblance to the Cercis (Judas Tree) mainly because of the leaves which are heart shaped, which I have here but I do not believe is related. I sure wish mine smelled of burnt sugar, soooooo sweet .....

It looks like Vitis cognetiae climbing up a tree. In the background you can see a tangle of Vitis stems with their tendrils.

My first thought was Cercis also Vicky.. :thumb: Otherwise it is really a couple of vines that spring to mind as Lavender has already said.. Do you think it was a vine Aesculus.?

    Thanks Victoria =]

I'm actually in Edinburgh now and my mum made the move to West Sussex so not on the Island anymore =[

Marley Farley's a good possibility that it was a vine to be honest I didn't pay much attention to it until after I took the photo and realised how pretty it was =]
