A stray cay who I have been feeding for some months in my garden looked unwell a few days ago and so I contacted a local cat rescue centre who came to look at him and took him to the vets. It seems that he has cat flu and needs antibiotic treatment for 10 days. I now have him in a large cage in my front room and, although he seems brighter, doesn't seem very happy with his situation. When I let him out of the cage during the day he heads for the garden-door and tries to get out. Obviously I can't let him out because he needs to be kept an eye on in case he misses a dose of his treatment. When he's better the cat rescue society suggests having him neutered.
I feel very guilty about curtailing his freedom.
Do you think he might get used to being indoors or, when it's all over, do you think he might disappear and not want to come back?

cat flu is very dangerous and he could have passed it onto resident cats.
I,m very suprised the local cat rescue didnt take him away and being in yours he will get used to it and at a guess you will have a friend for life

Presumably after he has recovered from cat flu, you will let him out again, he may have an owner - but he should be fine indoors til his treatment is finished.
When I moved here, both my late cats aged 7 became indoor cats - the road was too darn dangerous, and there had been a spate of cat napping. They settled down fine - but you have to watch the windows.

Hi, Jack, so you still have your friend, and now a poorly one!

I have had to have two of my cats in cages for long periods of time (six weeks) due to car accidents and due to their injuries I couldn't let them out. It's very sad watching them caged up but if it's necessary, then it has to be done.

I found a lot of pampering helped. Only time will tell if he'll stay with you. I hope so!

    Good luck.

We took in a stray gave her a collar and identity tag and she kept wandering off. People rang us from various take aways for us to fetch her back which we did but then removed her collar because it got annoying. She didn't disappear again until February when the weather became milder. I think some cats prefer the wandering life, she knew her way back to us if she wanted a home but she did at least have a warm cosy winter.
