Hi, I've been having some problems with a patio rose that is in a tub in my front garden. It started off this year great, really green and healthy and aside from some problems with greenfly and a couple of blackfly (which were quickly eradicated) it has been having some problems of late. It had a beautiful flush of flowers and then immediately started losing its leaves and looking on it's last legs.

At first I put this down to the fact that our neighbour had a go at clearing her front garden of various plants originally planted by the developer of our housing estate and something had come out of them, saw my rose bush and thought the dinner bell had been rung and attacked, but I gave it a feed, kept it watered and it started improving enough to have another go at flowering, now the same thing has happened again and I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with this rose bush.

It has been watered, inspected for pests and I can't find any reason why it's behaving in this way. What do you think is the problem?

It would really help if you can post a few pics to help identify the problem.

Weasl my patio rose has gone exactly the same way . It is about 6 years old , but this year after flowering it lost all its leaves . Maybe its had its alloted span and needs to go to compost heap heaven ?

I have had this happen to three of my patio roses this year and cannot fathom the cause. I've just cut them right back and see if they will recoup. :love30:

HarryS, The plant is only two years old so it can't be that it has had its day.

Same prob here...mine has had a poor second flush. And quite bald. May be the lack of sunshine weakening the plant.
I have given mine a good feed. And forked in a bit of bonemeal. It will be kill or cure ...and probably cut it back soon as flowers die off.

It's certainly not 'lack of sunshine' here, hans. In fact, I had thought at one point that mine had got burnt to a crisp due to the sun!

Well WOO , just repotted in JI 3 . Pruned right back , well watered and placed in a sheltered sunny spot :dbgrtmb: Hopefully this will give it a shot in the arm for a healthy display next year.
How long does a rose bush in a container last ? Do they reach a stage / age where they should be replaced

        TIA

Hi HarryS that,s great news, well patio roses last approximately 10 years, other roses can last a lifetime, the problem Harry is each rose is in a different environment and and position, some rosarians repot after 2 years some after 5 years some never,I will seriously research your question and will return with an answer for my friend, hope that is OK for the moment:)

Cheers WOO :blue thumb: . I know asking how long a plant lasts is like the proverbial how long is a piece of string .
