I have been a bit slack with my gardening this season. After most of the seedlings I was growing perished in the heat. I confess, I felt a little bit disheartened and gave up! However now I have stopped sulking and turned my attention to a new project.. a pond! Unfortunately we aren't blessed with a huge garden and are pretty limited with the space we have. But we are managing to make the most of the space with a new pond. We looked at some preformed ponds but none of them took our fancy. So we decided to be awkward and are in the middle of an L shaped pond! As you can see from the picture from last year and the first picture of this year. The garden has suffered a lot this year as it is in full sun all day. Fantastic for the tan, awful for the grass!

Looks fantastic! I'd like a pond one day if I don't have any kids.

In order to have a pond with fish, you should have a bio filter and UV, the water should be circulating 24/7 (so far no problem) but tight corners often become "dead areas" you have a very tight corner.............

If you look at most ponds they have sides that slope, the reason is to help stop the sides from falling in, the way round it is to build a retaining wall, is your excavation wide enough?

Pond liner, you can not buy an off the shelf L shaped liner, you will either have to have one custom made or spend a lot of money on liner you will not be using.

Those that do make L shaped ponds make them big to avoid problems, which is why most ponds are round square or some where in-between.

I had a "google" for L shaped ponds, there are not many, click me

Thanks for your comments, we will be making a bridge from railway sleepers, we are just levelling off the ground around the trench at the moment before we continue with the construction. Thanks for your comment watergarden, we wouldn't have begun the work without first, taking those details into consideration. We already have the liner sorted, any garden can have a standard pond shape pond. We wanted to do something a little different and as it is still under construction at the moment. The photos don't reflect the finished article.

hmmmm, so the liner is going in today! Couldn't have chosen a hotter day for it really! Not that I am complaining but we have burnt our feet several times. Wish us luck!

Looks like a really good job you're doing there. It'll make a nice view point from the patio door:thumbsup:

You realise that if you keep digging you could have a moat around the house:D:what:

I've always found a goat around the house tends to chew the furniture.

        Looking good Lollyb:dbgrtmb:

        Look forward to future pics:thumbsup:

I made my rill out of concrete slabs & waterproofed cement finished with a coat of bitumen, worked a treat.

I can't wait to see the end result, i know i'm going to be envious !

Another thing that struck me is your soil .... it looks so good ! My own garden is very stoney and rocky and i would need a mini digger to dig a hole here
          Would really love a pond.

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments, it's still a work in progress, my other half has been working 12 hour night shifts the last few weeks so the work on the pond and patio has been put on the back burner a bit. Just need some dryer weather and then we'll have all the concreting complete. The liner needs cutting down and reshaping in some places but we're doing it as we go along... I say we. I mean I have enjoyed watching! Here's a couple more pictures of the progress so far. Hopefully next time I post it'll all be done.

So ... the patio is finally complete, just have to sort out the other side of the pond now, pulling the liner tight and building the fountain and laying the last lot slabs... Have collected a lovely lot of pond plants now too!

            Hi Lollyb.

You don't say if it's your intention to put in some fish? If so, what do you plan for filtration? Looking good, btw :)

            Cheers...Freddy.
