Anyone tried spraying their toms and spuds with bordeaux mix? How effective is it at stopping blight taking hold?

I got fed up with losing my crop overnight every flipping year, so decided the gloves were coming off this year. We've just had a full smith period, so fingers and toes crossed.

I had mixed feelings about spraying though - even though Bordeaux mix is certified "organic", it looks like pretty nasty stuff.

Hi Andrew, I can't comment on the Bordeaux mix cos i've never used it. I don't like the idea of spraying anything after the fruit has started to set. I grow resistant varieties of tomatos, Ferline last year kept cropping right up to the end of the season when all my neighbours lost theirs by august, so i'm trying them again this year, and Fantasia. The potato leaves always look pretty sad by now, but it doesn't seem to affect the crop.

I'm not keen on using it either Charly. It's certified "organic", but I suspect that's a bit of a fudge to make sure commercial "organic" growers have a weapon against blight.

It certainly doesn't look particularly friendly when you spray it on your crops and everything turns blue!

I have used it in the past, it is very effective at stopping the spread of blight. Like you say it does leave stains and they take a bit of washing off to get rid. I've only had to spray 2 or 3 times in a season to keep blight at bay on my tomatoes. I first started a couple of years ago, no sign of blight here yet so I am holding off, I will spray with it again if needs be. As far as I know it sits on the surface of the plant so provided you give all your fruit a good wash you should be OK.

I've used it the last few years also.

I have no problems with it, I always wash the fruit before eating if I've sprayed, but never bother if I havn't, so its probably better for me to spray.:D

Seriously, it does look nasty and it pongs a bit but I'm still alive.
