I make it a rule not go on about my kids much as I tend to take the view that children are only interesting to their parents. I suppose it's good that little Henrietta is reading the complete works of Shakespeare at a very tender age - she's unlikely to leave school functionally illiterate anyway - but do I really need to hear about it? Give it twenty years or so, and we'll see if she turns into a useful person.

Anyway, I'm about to break my own rule as I'm delighted to say that my son has not only graduated with a First but has won a prize for the best dissertation in his subject area. This is something of an achievement for a boy who hated school with a passion, ducked out of it at every opportunity and didn't even complete his A Levels. Schools gave up on him all too easily but we never did; we always knew there was a very bright person hiding in there somewhere. He just has to do things his own way, not be told what to do. Can't think where he gets it from. :)

      Excellent news Clare:dbgrtmb:

Theres the dream where you picture your son saying "I'd like to thank the Nobel Acadamy"

Then theres the other dream where he's saying "You want fries with that"

Well, at least the person serving the fries has a job. :)

When my lad was small, he told me that the reason I had bad eyesight is that I'd read too many 'boring old books'. He'd always have perfect eyesight, he said, because he never intended to read anything.

Congratulations to your son for doing so well, and to you for giving him the opportunity to do so.

              CONGRATULATIONS that man!

Like all parents, I'm proud of my brood whether they 'win' things or not, but I do remember when my daughter got her First ringing Mr. F'smum and being a bit 'miffed' because he didn't seem as excited as the rest of us - only later did it occur to me that it was 4 am in Washington!

Did your clever son get a 'tangible' dissertation prize? My daughter's friend who won their dissertation prize received ..... a medal!!

congratulations to your son claralou and I can eco what you said in regards to stepping back at the right moment . Whatever formula works to get results from one person not necessarily works with the other. My two daughters are quite free spirit
and the one way to definitely get no results from them is to insist too much on something.

Ironically, given my son's early hatred of all things printed, at his university they make do with ... a book token!
