Hi all, I have a rose in a container which is very precious to me, its called remember me (my 18 year old nephew died just before xmas from meningitis and this was bought for me by my sister) It has some blackspot so I have removed the infected leaves. Is it best to prune it end of October or in April, I'm worried the frost may cause damage. I have some other roses which I bought this year and I cut 1 right back because it had blackspot and new shoots are now starting to appear. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Penguin,

Blackspot can be treated with a proprietary spray you can buy from a garden centre, pick off the affected leaves and burn or bin-don`t compost them. Prunhe lightly in Autumn but as with all roses I would prune back in Spring. Don`t worry too much, it will be okay.

Yup, I'm with Lollipop. Half-prune in Autumn so that the wind doesn't rock the plant about etc., and then prune hard in the spring.

I spray my roses with a proprietary Rose spray (for bugs and fungus) twice a month - 1st and 15th - during the growing season

By half prune do u mean cut the rose halfway down its length or take off a selection of branches?

LOL-I know it can sound very confusing with all the relative terms. Sorry-but I had to go through it LOL.

The aim of pruning is to get as many flowers as possible and for the bush to develop the way you want it to ie direction, height, width you require. If I was wanting a rose to continue to grow higher then in Spring my aim would be to take about a third of it`s height off the top to encourage new grow upwards in that direction. At any other time it`s a general maintenance prune-remove crossing branches so they don`t rub, remove any that a re growing in the wrong direction, any that a re broken or tired out-in your case with blackspot take off the leaves with blackspot aswell. Whne you have pruned it then spray it with the blackspot spray. Now somewhere there is a thread about a product called Bordeaux mix-I think I will be trying that when I start my spraying regime-I am lucky and don`t have blackspot ( but to be fair I have OCD where my roses are concerned and tend them like babies every single day rain or shine). Please tell me if all of this doesn`t make sense coz I have a tendency to waffle-sorry.

The crucial thing with black spot is to spray regularly, Fortnightly or weekly.

Thanks for your replies. I will remove any infected leaves and I will give it a little prune at the end of October, how much would you cut back in Spring?
    Thanks
