I have a number of shrub and bush roses, which I planted last year. They all flowered nicely and I deadheaded regularly. But I did not prune them in the autumn because my mum said it was best to do it in the spring. But now I don't know when to do it. Do you have to wait for the last frost to pass? All my roses have lots of new growth already, so I just cruelly cut that all off? When I have read about it, it says 'mid spring'. Does that mean March? Or APril? If so, early or late in the month? I live in Oxfordshire, if that helps.

Shrub roses I do early to mid March.

Other roses I prune back 1/3 in late november to prevent windrock /remove long shoots then properly prune any time between Jan and march thinning out growth, reducing it and removing dead wood.

Remember to be quite heavy handed with your summer dead heading as this is the best way for maximum flowering and a controlled shape.
