My Royal Bumble ( love the name!) has been flowering for a while and needs a prune - single flowers on the end of long stalks.
Should I just prune the stalks or go down a bit/ a lot further?

If you have a look down below the flower stalk, you "should" see 2 side shoots coming out either side of a leaf joint. Cut to there, but you can cut further down if you want, to neaten it up a bit. It will soon produce more flowers when the current batch have been removed .

For next year I would cut them back in spring after the worst of the cold has passed. This spring shearing promotes lots of new flower shoots, tidies them up and means you don't need to touch them during the growing season.

Yes @Thevictorian . I suspected that I had been cowardly in my spring pruning. I vow to be more brutal next year. Same goes for penstemons.

I agree with the Victorian. It is recommended you prune it back by a third but I usually prune it back by two thirds and it comes bouncing back every year.

I must admit I love Royal Bumble. I had one several years ago that flowered its socks off from May right through to November.
The only time I ever saw it flag was when we had a heatwave and temperatures in the 30s. As soon as the sun moved round, a couple of watering cans and it had perked up again within the hour. One of the best varieties imo.

Is this what I have known as Salvia Coccinea / Texas Sage? (Big Pot)

    upload_2025-6-11_11-27-5.jpeg

I did mine from seed and pic is June 2022. It grows twice that height and just last week cut it back about to height above. Love it. It seeds into other pots.

@Victoria . No . The leaves are more rounded and shiny.
I have a salvia like yours as well but I don't think it's a greggii. Can't remember the name. I might have the label somewhere.
    Here's the royal bumble

The Salvia Nursery in Malvern recommends pruning in July after flowering to promote new bushy growth.

I think I am up to 20 now of the greggii/jamiensis types.
