I prune mine twice a year August time and again January or February. In Aug. after flowering cut the long trailers back to 5-6 leaves of the currents seasons growth and in Jan or Feb cut back the same growth to 2-3 buds.

You prune wisteria twice - in July or August (after it's finished flowering) when you cut back the whippy green shoots of the current year’s growth to five or six leaves and then, in January or February, you cut back the same growths to two or three buds.

That's how you're supposed to do it - me, I just cut the long shoots off because they're untidy, I chop bits off with a pair of shears periodically to keep it the shape I want and let it get on with it! Although we have light, sandy soil, it's never been fed, watered or in any other way mollycoddled, it lives happily on a draughty, north facing corner where it gets hardly any sun and yet, every year, rewards my (lack of) TLC by being literally covered in huge flowers the perfume from which, if I have the window open, scents the whole of my dining room.
