I planted a wisteria last year and it has produced lots of foliage climbing to 6ft in height. There were as expected no flowers this year. Should I cut it back or leave it till it flowers?

We've several wisterias which I treat differently.
At present they are producing a lot of growth. Some people like theirs to grow long.
I've one I'm presently training to grow along a pergola, to replace one that died, so I reduced the top growth to two "strands" earlier in the year and now I'm allowing another two to follow them and I'm pruning back any other side shoots to a few inches.
Other people want there's to be more "bushy" as is this one I've got trained up and then cascading down a seven foot tree stump. I'm continually pruning back shoots at the top to encourage the energy of the plant to go into the bits I'm training down (temporarily held in place with wires) I'll give it a "tidy up" at the same time as I prune it. The "scruffy looking flowers" are the "second bloom" you get at this time of the year. I usually prune them off.

If yours hasn't flowered, it won't this year. So now it's a question of "directing it" where you want it to grow. The main pruning should be done in January, I usually now prune mine between Christmas and New year. Take it back to two or no more than four buds on each side stem. You know in the late spring you've got it right when the flowers appear before the foliage.
