I have a Berberlis Helmond Pillar which is approx 75cm tall. Some of the branches are deep red in colour where others are a bit brown in colour. I am assuming the plant needs pruning but I am not sure when the best time to do this and how brutal should I be

to be honest, I'm always very brutal with berberis....

If it's very straggly, as I expect it is, tidy it up whenver you feel it needs it - but if you want flowers and berries, you need to let them develop.

They are ideal plants for a wildlife hedge, as the thorns provide a protected area for birds to feed and even nest - but if you want a neat clipped hedge, you have to sacrifice the flowers and berries. If it's just a single plant - do what you prefer! :D

Not an accusation Dendrobium but rather an observation, if I may be so bold ;)
    Have a fine day!
