THE government last night dismissed fears over its massive, evil database insisting it would only ever be used to peer into the very depths of your soul.

Ministers have been forced to defend plans to record every email, text message, internet search and phone call, against critics who say it is both terrifying and tremendously messed-up.

But home secretary Jacqui Smith stressed the database was not only essential to the war on terror, but would bring government and citizen much closer together.

She said: "Look, the thing is, I like you - a lot - and I just want to know everything about you. "I can't 'give' myself to someone unless I know I can trust them completely. D'you know what I'm saying? "I need to know your hopes, your fears, your dreams, your freaky online habits and your socially unacceptable opinions."

She added: "Think of it as a romantic dinner where you're telling me your entire life story, except the table's bugged and I'm listening to you in that suspicious looking van across the road."

Insisting she would only have us killed if she had no choice, Ms Smith said: "The easiest thing is to just stop being different in any way. "But, on the outside chance your data does match our Profile of Unacceptability, I will make sure they use a high-powered rifle."

Err!! We've done this argument several times. It divides this way.
    1. I've got nothing to hide so the government ( any government) can do what they like.
    2. I don't like the government (any government) prying into my personal behaviour whatever my thoughts/behaviour are/is:confused:
    Depends on your personal opinions.
I promise you, all authority wants total control over your actions and beliefs. If you're happy with that, then fine. If you're not, then vote them out. The next lot will want to do the same thing. It's a power thing. Why do you think they go into politics?

And as I have said before I feel extremely sorry for the poor sap who gets paid to watch my comings and goings.

They would save a lot of money just paying the curtain twitcher across the road she knows everything about everybody.

    That's true.

I can remember when I was little and coming home from School. My nan was always sat at the window.

She knew everything about everyone...and what she didn't know, she'd make up.:D

:(:( 911 = The Twin Towers attack...!!!!:(:( I am surprised that has been forgotten Midnight... I was on one of the first planes to fly after that, so not likely to forget it in a hurry...! :( That gave President Bush & the FBI & CIA to read every email in & out of USA & the world. UKs MI5 too has been reading ours since then too..!!!:(

I think mid was having a gentle sarky dig about the way americanisms are becoming more and more accepted and not at you Marley. 911 in my tiny brain means the 9th Nov and I always struggle to translate it

:thumb: I know really John, sorry. I am ENGLISH to the bone, but I have many friends & relatives in the USA & one of the families lost a loved one in the first tower to collapse.. So maybe I am over sensitive about it.. :(

:thumb: I totally agree, we have far to much americanism & interference from them here & everywhere. I don't like it either, plus, after all we have paid back our loan now..!
:) It is also 9th November 2001 to me too John.. But to the world, that particular day is 911 now I think..:(
