Hi Everyone, first post here :)

I'm trying to grow some Hundredweight pumpkins this year (preferably 1 giant one but will see how things go), but all I seem to have are loads of female flowers and no males :( I've had to prune the secondary runners and i'm worried i'll run out of females before the males flower:

    Here are some pictures

Is there anything i can do or is it just a matter of waiting? They get watered every day (lots) and fed every week. They're in full sun (south facing garden) and with the heatwave we've been having have been growing really quickly? Theres 3 plants and all of them have long male stalks on but no flowers!!

    Thanks

Just general purpose Tesco plant food, the soil isn't the best (about 20cm of compost on top of clay) as we only moved in in April and didn't have time to prepare the ground.

Is it worth getting a better feed for them? I've noticed the males are shaded by the leaves - do they need a bit of sun?

Hopefully with a bit of assistance I can grow something :)

    Thanks

Sorry, it's potassium that I need to use now. Have been feeding them nitrogen incorrectly.

You'll find plenty of assistance here Smiley!

I feed mine with nitrogen feed to start to get allot of leaves growing then when you see an abundance of flowers switch to a phosphorus feed then when the flowers are pollinated I plan to switch to a potassium rich feed. the males on my plants have all grown on there stems to above the leaves when they have wanted to flower so I don't think them not getting sun is a problem. from what ive heard I think its probably just pure bad luck that all your females have come out first. nice garden btw.

Hello and welcome to the forum Smiley1987 :)

This same thing happens to me every year, it seems the plants produce lots of one sex of each flower, I grow a couple of plants side by side in an attempt to get one of each sex, but this year they are in sync with each other and I've had no luck in pollinating yet. Sooner or later you'll get both flowers and there is plenty of time for a whopper yet !
