That looks a bit like oilseed rape. Its not clear from the picture, but does it have 4 petals in a X formation - which is a sign of a brassica.

It sure does, here is a clearer photo.
Does this photo make IDing it any easier?
    Thank you

    Hi Cyberdyne

That picture clearly shows a brassica flower (similar to Wallflower, Hesperis - sweet rocket, etc) and its height, which I didn't take note of the first time I read it says oilseed rape. I think the original packet would have been more like a sack. :D

How strange! Some time in March I bought 4 or 5 small, 5in x2in regular garden seed packets from a garden centre. I carefully checked the size of all of the seeds on the back of each packet and all said approx. the same size - around 6in to 8in max. at full size (my intention was to have them all roughly the same size in a window box).

So, you can imagine my amazement over the last couple of months as one of my purchases has grown to aroudn 4 foot!!!

I'm now wondering if somehow the wrong seeds were mixed into one of the packets?! Only 8 of this 'flower' have grown in total so clearly this would not indicate a full packet.
    :dh:

    Thank you for your replies.

As I am sure you know, oilseed rape is the plant that makes up the fields of yellow that you see in the countryside. Its quite common to find seedlings in gardens - from seeds presumably dropped by birds.

I am assuming your plant was such a seedling. If however you have a whole packet of this - its more of a mystery.

The single stemmed plants (8 of them) were in two window boxes, they have never been in contact with a garden as they're located on the second floor - approx. 25ft off the ground. I did not have a packet of them as I would not have bought them had I known their size and my boxes rarely get birds on/in them due to their location!

So I can only assume they were placed accidentaly in one of the seed packets I bought!?

Oil seed rape is a very common seed in purchased bird seed.
It comes up all over the place in my garden.
