In the next few weeks my husband will be starting to lay our new slabbed patio(he doesn't know it yet!) Incorporated into the patio i would like t have a pergola with one side attached to the house wall. Now is it best to lay the pation then put in the pergola or the other way around? Neither of us have ever done anything like this so any help on this and how to attach the pergola to the patio would be useful.

It would be far safer to put the slabs down last otherwise you would be securing your posts to the slabs. I would use a little concrete around the posts and possibly use metal extensions from the concrete to the posts [a couple of inches above slabs] thereby slowing down the rotting process although tanalised, or treated, posts will last quite well. You may set the posts to coincide with a join in your slabs making cutting easier. Do your patio levels first, I use pegs knocked in to the required depth a long straight edge and spirit level are required.
