Last year I trained some pyracanthas, espelier style, along the house wall. They berried well. In spring this year I pruned and tied in any new growth but these have no berries forming. How can I ensure that the berries carry on along the new growth? When should I prune the pyracanthas so that they berry?

    Look forward to any advice.

    Cheers...

Hi Rydall, for Pyracanthus to berry you first need flowers, my advice would be, like I have told others on this site, to start feeding with a high potash Tomato feed. This encourages plants to produce flowers. It will not happen this year but if you start feeding now it should happen next year. David.

Rydall, did you prune after flowering or before, as far as I know they flower on the previous years growth, on short stems.
So pruning should not be drastic.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

    daitheplant:
I will try and give them a regular high potash feed daitheplant. Do I stop feeding when the new growth stops in the autumn?

    Pete:
I cannot remember when I pruned them pete but I didn't prune off any flowers. I will try and tie in the current new long growth and see if it flowers next year. Would you cut them before or after flowering next year?

    Oktarine:

The variety that I have is Saphyr Rouge 'Cadrou'[ which I was told was the best red. It certainly was. At first I thought that they were orange but over a long period of time they turned a beautiful veibrant red. Apparently the Saphyr range are the best in resistance to scab which can affect certain pyracanthas.

I think I would not prune this year or next spring, and try to tie in all growth, that way you can see whats happening.
Anything that has not flowered next spring can be cut back early summer.

I would keep feeding for as long as they are growing and start again in early spring. David.
