I’ve seen someone local selling a Qualcast Suffolk Punch Lawn Mower. Are they any good and can you get parts for them easily? After having a nightmare with my Hayter I thought I would try one of these.

My OH has had a couple of Suffolk Punch mowers over the years, and the current one is still going strong. There are various places online that sell spare parts.
I don't think it would hurt to take a look at it .

Another vote for having a look. I’ve had one in my ‘stable’ of lawn mowers for getting on for 40 years. Currently needs a new drive/gear/clutch cable (sorry, non technical) but I don’t envisage it being a problem to get one. Must get it sorted as the ultimate backstop mower is a circa 60/70 year old Ransomes/Qualcast push mower and I am not sure if I have the puff for it these days!

This is the mower. It’s had new oil and spark plugs. £60.

Thats probably a 1990s model, cant quite remember when they stopped.
Check the cylinder for stone damage, chipped blade or a bent bottom blade. Can be resharpened with a cylinder grinding lathe (Atterdon & Ellis etc) If it starts, runs ,its easily worth £60. A new equivalent would be in the range of £8-900

That’s good to know. I’ve also seen this:

But the seller wants £180. Or do you think go with the other for £60? As I’m not sure of the difference?

It does look okay for £60.whats the best way to sharpen the blades as I’ve never done it before.

Both machines came from the same stable ! (pun)
Suffolk SIF1955 bought out by Qualcast,1977 later by Atco then Bosch1990 ish
Never used one as scarifier, but could be useful , as I guess your Hayter was a rotary...
Would depend upon your wallet and your requirements.

The only properly satisfactory way to sharpen cylinder mowers is by grinding on a dedicated machine, found in only a few places these days* (Ask a garden machinery company if they use an <Atterton & Ellis> )
            *Looks like this :

Looking through my lists of unwatched threads (because I have a sad life), I came across this.
How are you getting on with it @RDB85 ?

I didn’t end up buying it. I’m possibly looking at something else.
