Hi, I’m new here and looking forward to getting into some garden talk and learning new things.

But firstly I was wondering about this, and how much you would pay to get all this cut back?

Welcome to the forum. I just arranged for the gardener who does my hedge to come in this month. He charges £25 per hour and that includes taking it all away although there is a surcharge for taking it to the council tip since he is a contractor.

    Hi,

How much did you pay ? if you are able bodied might be worth buying some good electric hedge cutters with a long reach.
Like most gardening tasks, if trimmed regularly its a much easier job than a once a year chop.
We usually have to trim ours back 4 or 5 times a year.

I get it cut about three times a year. I have both a mains electric trimmer and a brand new cordless one. The problem is neither my wife nor myself are fit for the job. It is a huge hedge which takes the young fit lad who does it a full day.

We cut ours twice a year too ,our hedge completely surrounds our property. Hubs does it himself. My Dad's gardeners also use to charge £25 per hour and took all the trimmings away.

I only cut once a year, all the fast growing hedge like privet I've replaced with beech. Cut in late July annually. I think I can see laurel in your last photo @Kym ? That is difficult to cut with the big leaves and can look bad if done too quickly. I think it's best to pay the going rate for someone that knows what they are doing. My neighbour gets a cowboy in who charges £400 a day, two people who just skim the beech so it needs doing twice a year! The other side uses a pro gardener who gets it right in one cut. They need trimming back to last year's cuts otherwise the hedge grows a few inches each year eventually becoming too wide. I suggest that has happened to your laurel @Kym, to look neat it should match the brick wall line.

Sorry to be critical @Kym but your first photo 'after' looks wrong to me, it should be 'battered' I.e. narrower the higher it goes. Was that done by a pro ?

I showed the pictures to my gardener who does our hedges. He reckons, from what he can see in the photos, that it should easily be done in two hours - including clearing up.
