Question for the wildflower experts

    Took this pic the other day, had an idea it was a purple flowered plant I grew once, but cant remember the name.

    Anyway came across this today, and it looks similar, but its yellow.
    Am I wrong about the other one being purple, as there were no flowers, just seed.

    The top one to me looks like an alium..but i am certainly not 100% and the second one well i havnt got a clue but it is attractive..hornbeam will tell you he knows all of them..

    The top fuzzy one looks like Anemones here when they go into seed ... all fluffy ... but I wouldn't stake my life on that!

    Haven't got a clue on the second one.

    Sorry to disappoint, but those yellow hawkbits, hawksbeards and hawkweeds are so difficult to sort out. The yellow flower is a Goat's-beard and they do have seed heads like a dandelion - but this whole tribe does! The family also includes the sow-thistles, ox-tongues, cat's-ears as well as the lettuces.

    You may well have seen a purple one and that would have been Salsify. It is a goat's-beard that was once taken into the kitchen gardens for salads.

    Amazingly I just too a piccie of such a seed head today in a vergeside. Had the old flower head beside it. Will post if and see it its the same.

    Thanks all for the replys, I know a bit more now than I did, there's a lot of it about Fran. [​IMG]
    If I get time I'll have a google and see what comes up now I've got a few names to play with.
