Question regarding roses

    I have a rose planted in a frost free area in a border at the side of our house. The issue is as I assume, roses needs to be deciduous in winter in order to survive.

    This one however is not showing any signs of becoming deciduous, and looks like it will stay evergreen over winter.. is this dangerous to the wellbeing of the rose.. for example could the lack of winter dormancy end up killing it? Or can roses handle being evergreen?

    On the photo below (taken earlier) it is just to the right of the spider plant growing up the fence.

    To be honest Stephen it doesn't look like a rose to me in the picture. Sorry to doubt, but has it bloomed?

    A rose doesn't have to shed it's leaves to survive as far as my experience shows, Stephen:dunno::snork: . I have 20 and more roses in the garden and only about 5 or 6 of those ever lose their leaves entirely while the rest seem to hang on to theirs in one form or another during the Winter. I worry more about bud burst and making sure that I spray with anti Black Spot every so often for a month or two.:coffee:

      It's definitely a rose Sheal.. it's a zephirine drouhin

      Thanks, I didn't realise they could hang onto the leaves.. !

      All my roses still have leaves on them. If yours is in a sheltered position then it's more likely to do so. I assume they will at least some of their leaves off at some stage, but not as yet :dunno:

      The rose is to the right Sheal , plant in the centre is Chlorophytum 'Spider plant'

      Unfortunately there are no evergreen roses as such - depending on the winter some varieties retain their leaves (not always the same variety I might add)but the general opinion is that it is better if they lose their old leaves each year. Some people even cut them off!
