I recently bought a Skimmia Laureola Olympic Flame and would like to know if it is male or a female plant

Any help on this matter would be appreciated as it seems not many people know the answer

Sorry Linda, I had no idea skimmias were male and female. Holly's yes - cos you need both for the berries, but skimmias no.

Linda, is it a new variety?
Where did you get it? Didn't they say when you bought it.
Laureola, as far as I can make out is quite different to the usual japonica or reevesiana that we see.

It is a new variety, i bought it from Pennells Grimsby but they didn't know if it was male or female

but if i bought a skimmia reevesiana, which is self pollenating, would that pollenate the olympic flame so that i would still get the berries?

Wouldn't like to say linda, possibly.
Truth is I dont know, I think I would wait and see what happens.
Presumebly the plant you bought is female, otherwise you wouldn't get any berries anyway.
It is possible that the male/female rule doesn't apply to this spieces. [IMG]
    Let us know what happens.

Skimmia can be either hermaphrodite (self polinating) or dioecious (like Holly, needing both male and female plants for the females to bear fruit) Sorry but I can't find anything specicific for 'Olympic Flame'and I don't know if it would cross pollinate with a hermaphrodite variety.
