    my Japanese maple, has a few small dead branch`s am i ok to prune these off now? and also a few rather random branch`s growing which i would like to prune? can i prune now without any harm to it... this time of year... thanks in advance

    cheers, i have 2 off them in large pots, doing well, i have slate around the top off the pot, which i have just removed to give a clean, i`ve noticed the soil/compost needs topping up!! can i use ericous compost which i have in the shed and also i found a bag of soil condioner... any help on this tooo....

    Hi Scooby, I've got 2 Acers in big pots, like you, and one of them "Emerald Lace" has taken a bashing even though I protected it with fleece. The combination of -15 degrees and high winds is something Acers do not like.

    I'm giving mine a prune next week and also renewing the top of the compost. I use general purpose compost and found, over the years Acers are quite happy in it. Using the lime free compost seems a good idea if it's going spare. I wouldn't bother with the soil conditioner for the Acers.
