Thank you Dovefromabove. I was clearing up the next door garden for an old lady and at first sight thought I'd found a nest of something.:):loll:

Lovely shrubs. They're popular round here, although the fruits don't last very well. The flowers on most of them are looking very nice just now.
I've been considering one for a gap I have.

The fruits are very fragrant. Even if you don't like eating them, you can just put them in a bowl and enjoy the smell.

i make a solid jam from them:
peel and deseed, add a speck of water and boil until reduced a bit, add 40% sugar by weight to the quinces and simmer further. took about 1.5 hours on low just occasionally stirring until its a thick syrup. then i put into a baking paper lined glass tray and let it set over 2 days till solid.
made it at christmas. the fruit seem to last on the bush or ground till march.

if you sow those seeds they might germinate this year

I checked my quince tree today, variety Vranja, and could not find a single flower. I think the recent storms stripped it so no fruit this year, along with the pear blossom. Boo Hoo!

The true quince.....Cydonia oblonga Vranja Nenadovic ...such a special tree..lucky you.
Completely different from the Japanese quince...above.
It is a tree which has a single flower on the end of the branches.
These turn into large pear shaped edible fruits.
I would have thought 1st week in May would be too early to see any flowers.
Then again as you live in Cornwall maybe now is the time for flowers.
Shame if the weather has ruined them.

The Cydonia quince down the road from here has just started into blossom … I noticed it this morning. Unlike apples and pears the quince flowers appear after the leaves are on the tree.

Our Cydonia oblonga "Meech's Prolific" flowered last month and hopefully the flowers have been pollinated and we get some great harvest as always. We have another one in the orchard but can we remember the variety..... instead of pear shape fruit they are apple shape and also finished flowering some weeks ago.
              ps the variety is Vranja
