Quitting smoking

    So, after several months of cold turkey (occasionally succumbing and having a day of smoking) I have invested in some nicotine patches. I bought them on Saturday, (24mg patches). It took half an hour of it being on my arm before I was in the bathroom with my head down the loo. It rendered me useless for the remainder of the afternoon, HOWEVER, I no longer want nicotine (nor the same effects).

    Regardless of whether or not they are intended to work like that, they achieved their goal.

      If you've gone months of cold turkey, you'd have been better off with the step 3, 7mg patches. By putting on a full strength patch, I'm afraid all you'll have done is woken up the nicotine craving neurons on your brain, and once they wake up, as you know, they make a lot of noise until you appease them with more nicotine.

        I do hope so, having got this far it would be a shame to go back again.

          I understand that's what has/should've happened, but honestly I'm feeling no side of that. I don't want a cigarette, and when I get stressed (playing Dark Souls), it goes away within minutes. I've not thought about a cigarette.

              When Mr Kandy finally decided to give up smoking he did it through the nurse practitioner at our surgery.He can't remember exactly what dosage he started with,but sure it wasn't as high as yours and he had to wear them on his arm for a certain amount of time changing it daily.He had to shave the hairs off of his arm where the patch was going to be placed as it wouldn't stick with the hair in the way,plus it would have been painful ripping the patch off each day (bit like waxing:snork:)

              He had the dosage lowered after several weeks he thinks it was,and eventually was able to give up with the patches altogether.We have just been trying to work it out and he thinks it has now been about six years since he packed in and although he sometimes has the odd craving he feels that the money saved and the improvement in his health very beneficial although since packing it in he has put on over a stone in weight:doh::snork:

                Yes, you have ... you posted this thread today ;):heehee: Ok, ok ... you mean you haven't thought about *having* a cigarette and I applaud you, wholeheartedly for that: Bravo! :yay:

                But, I'm in two minds about your reaction to the patch :scratch: Of course it is very possible that you had a patch with a higher concentration that perhaps you needed - so that may have brought on the vomiting/feeling wretched all day response. However, is it possible the sickness/debilitation could have been due to something else, perhaps? :noidea: Not that it makes any odds. The fact is, you have associated the vomiting/debilitation with the patch/smoking and the result is that you no longer wish to have that your life any longer :thumbsup:

                Wishing you continued success in your (now) smoke free zone - please, please, please ... do not reach out for one (even at Dark Souls most frustrating/challenging moments) under the illusion that "just one won't hurt" ... it will, it does, it grabs you regardless. Stay focussed :thumbsup: You are young .. no matter how hard the temptation may feel ... trust me - it is far harder the longer you are addicted ;)

                  I've been quit since Easter. Well, technically anyway, although I must confess I scrounge the odd one now and then. In fact I average about 3 rollies per week, always on a saturday afternoon when I go and see my dad.

                  As @"M" says, it does indeed grab you, so you need a reason to not let it. Its probably hard when you're in your prime, because you tend to be physically fit no matter what you do, and its hard to imagine any other way to be. But as you get just a little bit older, being fit becomes a challenge. In my case, the lad (young CL1.1, my 5 year old lad) and I have taken up martial arts:) Every week my son just casually does whatever exercises or moves our instructors says, without breaking a sweat, while I become a rain cloud, literally dripping a rain of sweat everywhere I go, and about on average 1 in 3 times I fail to get through the whole session without having to take a break. Last week, my son didn't notice that I'd survived 3 sparring matches, he just noticed that I was at the sidelines out of breath by the time the sparring session finished. He came over and asked, 'daddy, why didn't you join in?'. That alone is enough to prevent me from become hooked again. Besides, when every muscle in your body is physically spent and your heart and lungs are still working hard trying to refuel them and flush away lactic acid several hours after you've stopped, you tend to instinctively just be repulsed by the idea of anything that would impede that process. The moral of this little tale, find yourself some physical challenge. Not only will it help keep you off the death sticks, but you'll get yourself super fit in the process.

                    well done! i hate smoking! i am a smoker though! but i stop for long periods ie 3 or 4 years then come up against work stress and start again!! hate myself for it too! because withdrawal is so horrible!! wish they had clinics where they could lock you up , i would be there in a second!

                      Don't do that. I used to do that, until I realised it just doesn't help. If you slip up, you slip up. Its better if you don't, but most of us do. When we do we can either hate ourselves and emotionally flog ourselves, or we can just accept who we are, appreciate what we've got, look for the positives in everything, and chin up, crack on, and just sort ourselves out again.

                        I've quit 60/70 a day so know where you are coming from well done you!!!!
                        Sincerely treet your self to something nice I saved up and got my shot gun carved by a young lady off FB the level of craft woman ship is 2nd to none and will last for generations to come just treet me and my good lady to a nice camera and am finishing a 3/4 year restoration of my coffin a 1963 split screen vw camper gospel all through not smoking deep joy good luck keep up the grate effort I've managed it with drink drugs and smokes now but r ember it's just for today or even hour by hour just don't pick up that 1st one do anything but walk the dog walk your self clean the car the house what ever it takes and it will pass

                            It sounds like you overdosed on the nicotine to me. I've had a similar feeling off a e-cig vape thing. I used a e-cig for a few months and was straight on to only 3 rolls a day, for some reason I stop using and back on to the rolls again. Only 10 a day mind, but still not good.

                            I am also bit suspicious of the e-cigs too...
