Back ground info; we bought a house built in the 1970s. It came with the typical front and back garden and that should have been that..... But the next building plot on which happened to be the last of the line on a corner was prepared for building, had its top soil stripped off then oddly all buliding stopped. It never restarted. The whole plot got signed over to our plot for a garden for free and has been ever since.

My problem; the grass on the empty plot is very poor due to haveing all the top soil taken leaving just clay and rock behind, the garden also has mature trees that send out roots less that an inch from the surface in all directionss making taking the turf of very tricky..

So.... Is it possible to lay extra top soil onto the existing grass, prep it well, lay new turf down then baby sit it until it's safe.. :what:

    What do you think everyone.

    Hi Matt,

That is a plan, but the trees will still find the new topsoil a bonus, one tree on my plot loves the fact it can find water & nutrients there & keeps invading.

Just a suggestion , I had a similar problem up to last year .....then knocked the tree down , not for the roots problem but for the leaves mess ........what I did , i dag about 1 foot all around the tree , then got some pond liner , made few hole for the drainage and recovered with new compost and soil ........belive or not, but i was able to grow plants where nothing was growing before.

Wow and extended garden for FREE, How lucky can you be

Use the extension for a small orchard, or If you wish can you cut down the trees and start a Garden of your choice

I can not offer advice as I am a beginner myself, but a pic or two and your intentions would be a help
Maybe a grassed area with a bench in the shade of a mature tree, and maybe a bar BQ area or something, or do you want to go the Veg or Flowers route ?
