In the news today, it says a passenger jet had to be escorted in after a bomb scare.

The news article tells us quite a lot about what happened, but not why. I'm curious, it sounds like this was a hoax, but had it been for real, what could the RAF actually do? I can only think of one thing, and that would be every bit as horrible as what the baddies might have intended anyway.

I saw it, has I work in Stockport, just seen the local news, if it had been a hijacking they could blow it out of the sky.
My office is on the flight path to Manchester so you get used to seeing the planes coming in but not with a RAF Typhoon escort.
They have arrested a passenger on making a hoax bomb threat.

The QRA team have well defined orders regarding the fate of an aircraft should it look like becoming a 9/11 incident. So an escorting aircraft has the job of ensuring the aircraft stays within the prescribed airways and doesn't "wander". Then when the aircraft has landed it's job is to make sure it doesn't take off again without authorisation.

And if the aircraft wasn't to do as requested?

As I said, Ellen, the QRA Team has well defined orders. Those orders have been in existence for longer than you'd think.........only the political aspect of them changes as the years go by.
