i have two raised beds which I use for planting vegetables. Other than a few leeks, both beds are empty. Do I do anything with the soil in the beds now to prepare them for winter and for planting again in the spring?

For me Autumn is the perfect time to get the soil ready for Spring growing.
I go over my bed(s) and remove all of the weeds that are growing and then I dig the ground over going about 8" deep.
I try to compost as much as possible from early in the year and I add this compost to my soil, I also dig in well rotted manure and leaf mould, depending on what I will be growing in that area.
If you do not have any compost, manure or mould you could (and I have) dug in shredded leaves, I shred them first because they are easier to break down in the soil but if you do not have a shredder it doesn't matter.
In early Spring I apply chicken manure pellets and fork or rake them in, I usually get mine from Wilkinsons and they seem very good.
Hope that this helps, I am sure that others will have their opinions.
