Hi, I planted some climbers and ramblers earlier this year, gave them a good dose of well rotted farm muck, and some have already reached the top of the trellis (only about 4'6").
I have already cut back a few branches which were going the wrong way - over the path - is it advisable to nip out the header from the longer branches now to encourage them the throw more branches from lower down or just fan them out more and tie in and prune at the usual time?

I'd do both. I f you just nip out the tips they will carry on trying to go upwards; if you train them more horizontally they will grow side branches upwards.
