We are clearing our garden (left overgrow by previous owner) which has ivy, various thistles and what I think is a black or false nightshade (see pic). My husband came up with this leg rash after clearing the garden, which has been there 3 days now and is raised. Is it likely caused by the plant in the pic or the many other, various garden weed we have cleared? I read that English ivy can cause rashes too. He will be wearing long trousers next time we are clearing the garden! What is the plant in the pic and any idea what caused the rash?

    Some kind of nightshade.
That looks more like an abrasion to my untrained eye.

Could he have been bitten? Is it itchy? Has the red area grown in size? If it has, I would show it to a pharmacist who will be able to advise whether it needs expert attention.

Thank you both. I should have said, that it didn't look like a scratch/cut, but had a tiny blister in the centre initially and it itchy and sore to touch. We did show a pharmacist and he was given 1% hydrocortisone cream. Its 3 days later and the entire rash is slightly raised now. I did wonder if it could be a spider bite? He is well otherwise.

I think I would be inclined to give the pharmacist another look. Just to be on the safe side.

Only thing I have had that has blistered is euphorbia sap when exposed to sunlight, it took ages to go but it burned every time I got the sun on it after that.
Most of these things just run their course and settle down eventually.

I usually just put some TCP on such things if they are bothersome, if not it will just sort itself out.

@My Clay Jungle I think some antistamines and more cortisone cream might help but best to see a pharmacist again just in case.

I get rashes from sticky bud/goose grass so have to rug up or get OH to deal with it. Same with nettles - a few stings is fine but too many and I get a rash. Some of the hairier, bristly weeds can set me off too.

Our plot has many wild and untamed bits so I get scratched, scraped, blistered, stung and cut all the time. i also get all sorts of bites as I appear to be a lot sweeter than OH, well, at least my blood is.

Whenever I get bitten they always come up with a small blister in the middle and are extremely itchy. :dunno: I know they are bites and not a reaction to plants as I always cover up when working in the garden. I never work in the garden without gloves (except when harvesting fruit and veg), always wear long trousers and have to wear pressure stockings but the little b....s still get through. Itchiness and red marks tend to last between one and two weeks.

There are very few that actually do much other than taking just a little bit of pain and very annoying itchiness before the body fights it off.

If you want to frighten yourself a little bit you could read this thread Poisonous Plants - A summary
but for most of the plants listed there you would have to be very determined if you wanted to do damage to yourself. :heehee:

I find that Hand Sanitiser helps to stop the itching.

I very rarely react to anything but I get a rash from cleavers/sticky buds. And because the stems are so long I have to make sure my arms and wrists are fully covered when pulling it out, not just my hands. The rash goes after a day or so though.

Sounds like mosquito bites to me, either way, dip a tea spoon in very hot water put it on the bite. It will provide relief for a few hours. Obviously make sure it is not so hot as to burn yourself.

My guess is a bite. I get ones that blister at the bite site and come up red and swollen about 2" around it, sometimes with more widespread swelling. Some people's immune systems react worse than others and sometimes I envy those who just get a tiny bump from bites. I never catch the biters in the act so I don't know what the culprit is. Either hydrocortisone cream or antihistamine cream helps (I don't use both at the same time), and oral antihistamines for any that get badly swollen (like my whole foot or arm, or on my face close to eyes, nose or mouth).

Aloe Vera works so long as you haven't scratched it at all

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. Its not a mosquito bite. The next day, the small patch had tripled in size, and he had 3 more over his legs. They had angry, red, scratch marks coming from them too and each day they got progressively worse! He has been using anti-histamines and prednisone cream and still feels fine in himself. I 'think' its turned a corner and the redness is finally fading. Thanks.
