    Hello again
    Another question I'm afraid

Last year I bought 5 raspberry canes and got some smashing fruit.
A couple of days ago I was looking at them and noticed, new shoots were sprouting from them, so I cut them down by about 2/3rds.
Today I went out and removed a layer of dead leaves that had been on the soil since autumn and there are loads of new shoots coming out of the soil.
Do I leave last years canes or should I cut them right down and let the new growth take over ?

Autumn-fruiting Raspberries fruit on this-years-wood, earlier fruiting types fruit on last years wood.

Both types you should cut down to the ground after fruiting.

If you have got canes that fruited last year then cut them down to the ground.

However, if you have new canes just appearing from the soil that sounds like they should be Autumn-fruiting type - the earlier fruiting types would have made new-cane growth last year, and those canes would be 4 or 5 feet tall by now. So if the ones you have are NOT Autumn fruiting, and only just appearing from the soil, something is wrong!

(The fact that you got fruit in the first year suggests they are Autumn fruiting)

They are called 'Joan J' or something like that. I got them from QVC.

They were still producing raspberrries in December

Joan J is Autumn fruiting, so you are good to go!

Cut all last year's canes off that bore fruit, and the spouts at the bottom will grow up this year and give you fruit again in the Autumn.
