Last year I planted a couple of raspberry canes which fruited same year - lots of lovely rasps :)

This year I have noticed something growing in the area the canes are planted, but around 6 feet away .... and they have same leaves etc as the rasps so guess that is what they are .... I didn't realise raspberries threw out runners ... so will have to dig them up .... unless there is something else I can do

You need to cut down any canes that had fruit on (sometime after they finish fruiting and ideally before Spring). Sounds like yours are Autumn fruiting, but either way provided you only cut down canes that have carried fruit this pruning technique works for both Summer and Autumn, just with the Summer ones it will NOT be all the canes, and for Autumn types it will be all of them :)

Its obviously easier to see which canes carried fruit if you cut them down shortly after fruiting as they will still have the "core" from the fruit attached.

Hopefully you are confident whether all your canes carried fruit (chop them all down now!) or only some of them (more difficult ... :( )

The new "suckers" you see coming up will carry the next crop

Unfortunately the suckers coming up are in amongst the flowers far away from the original 2 canes :(

Somewhat surprising they would be far away, particularly if they are only one-year-olds. My Raspberry bed is about 3' - 4' wide, originally a double-planted row, and I very rarely see suckers appearing outside that "zone".

Do you remember what variety they were?

Either way, you'll get fresh suckers this year which will give you the next crop. Perhaps the raspberries haven't come up yet and what you are seeing in the flower bed is something else?

Hi Kristen, no can't remember what variety they were - I bought that one as it said it would fruit the first year and it did - a lovely crop ... I did also buy a golden one later on and it also fruited but not as many as the reds ... I planted them next to my fence incase I needed to support them, as I only have a small garden ... definately suckers - the leaves are absolutely exactly the same as the canes next to the fence ... a mystery to me !
