I've had a very poor show on my raspberry bush this year.
Its only 2 years old and last year we had a fantastic crop, yet this year we have only had about 4 fruit, I read that it needs pruning back hard in autumn...so I did, but i'm now wondering whether it only fruits on previous years growth and the advise was misleading.
I know you haven't much to go on, but any clues or hints would be gratefully reecieved.
    Thanks

You should cut any branch / shoot that fruited back to the ground after fruiting has finished. Leave any branch / sucker that did NOT fruit.

This works for both Summer and Autumn fruiting types - but, in effect, for Autumn Fruiting types you will be cutting all shoots to the ground, and with Summer fruiting types only the "old wood"

Raspberries respond very well to a heavy mulching. Your raspberry bush will soon become a raspberry patch, and then a raspberry field if you let it.

Kristen has it right. If a raspberry cane had fruit on it, cut it down to the ground. If it did not, don't.

Sounds like you have Summer Fruiting variety, so the canes that have sprung up this year will bear the fruit next year.

You are supposed to cut them down to the ground straight after planting, so they build up their strength (and forgo a crop), so taking a crop and then cutting them down so you have no crop this year will come to the same thing. You should get a great crop next year ... sorry about this year :(
