I have a big clump of rasps growing from next door's compost pile along the side of my shed. Could I take cuttings and plant them in a better place, as I just recently found how to make jam...:)
How do I take cuttings ? Is it easy ?

Hi, I haven't tried it with raspberries, but have taken blackberry cuttings and they worked just fine.
Make a sharp neat cut just under a leaf shoot, about 3 shoots from the top, angle the cut downwards away from the side of the shoot, then remove the lowest shoot so you have a length of stalk.
there are several ways to root a cutting and all have worked for me in past, you can simply dip it in water then plant it in a pot, to give it a bit more of a chance dip it in rooting hormone powder before planting, alternatively, leave it in a cup of water (make sure the leaves are above the water level) until it has rooted and then plant in a pot. Keep it indoors on a window ledge or in a greenhouse until the roots are firmly developed.
    Hope this helps

forgot to mention....make sure the shoot you choose is not in flower or fruiting. It needs to be a leaf only growing tip!

Sorry Ming, but all I know about raspberries is that blackbirds love them and the fields around me are full of them.
There are no blackbirds in my garden now. They are all out in the fields gorging on raspberries.
I'm sure I'll see the proof soon with the big purple splotches on my terrace and running down my windows !
Blackbirds and raspberries. Well it's just that time of year again.

Yes, these are rasps. There's a load growing along the back road too, I've got a pile in the freezer. And the brambles are still to come...:) Thanks very much for this, it will save me a fortune !

One more daft question - how late can I leave it to plant the new bits ? Because the space I want to put them in, has my tatties in it and I woul dneed to wait until they are pulled. Might be as late as Oct.

I would let them root, transfer them to a bigger pot for winter, keep away from any frosts and plant out next spring :)

ok might need to just leave them then - we get very cold winters and theres nowhere thats away from frosts unless I bring them in the house !

you can bring them in if you have a cool place that doesn't get too hot from the central heating. alternatnatively you can wrap the pots in bubblewrap or fleece, that may protect them
