    Hi
My lawn is around 80' X 40' and although is reasonable condition it is very uneven with bumps and dips all over it, what I had in mind to do is to cover the whole lawn with a mixture of (good grade) top soil mixed with Irish moss peat dragging a 6 meter length of 6" X 3" of timber across as we go to give me a level finish, and then I will let this settle for a month or so and then repeat it again and again and this will take me through to the spring ready for me to lay turf. Could anybody advise me as to weather I am doing the whole thing correctly?
    Regards
    Ray

The method I use prior to turf or seed is as follows:

When weather allows spray the existing lawn to kill off the grass and weeds.

Run a cultivator across and rake to level tilth, if needs be importing top soil.

    Roll

Let everything settle for a couple of weeks and ree rake if needs be.

    Sprinkle a pree seed fertilizer

    Lay turf or seed

If its only unneven then just fill the hollows with top soil, allow to settle, ree fill if need be and seed these areas in spring.

You canot lay turf on top of existing grass, if you want to ree turf then you will need to run a cultivater over to get a tilth and if your doing this you may as well do it properly and spray off the old lawn.

    hi ray

i would just like to say that i layed turf on top of turf nearly 4 yrs ago i did place some good topsoil on top of the old lawn though and leveled it out ect and i have no weeds/moss and a lovely green lush lawn and im also on water logged clay !

as its given plenty of tlc this lawns the best i have ever had and also the cheapest turf i have ever bought the one underneath cost me 4 times as much approx £197 for 20m x 20m and was pants full of weeds and kept dying off !

im not saying that to kill off the old lawn is not the correct way but ! i did'nt and mine is fine with no problems.

Hi Ray, your proposed method of levelling is similar to that which we have used many times & works a treat though I would suggest you get some help in, to drag the beam. We use a finely cut green waste compost as a soil improver as this is a renewable material (& alot cheaper than Irish moss peat) [IMG]
