re-planting laurel ?

    Hi all
    Can anyone help me..i want a laurel plant from my pal's garden, does anyone know when it is safe to dig it out and re-plant it ?

    and also the same with the japanese maple..can i just dig them out and re-plant them anytime?

    I think the textbook answer for Acer's is that they should be moved when dormant. Take as much of the root as possible. Trim the branches back (IIRC 1/3 but worth checking that out). Protect over winter with fleece (protecting the cut branches). Be prepared for 12 months of poor foliage.

    However, I moved one in mid-summer, without trimming, and managed to lose only some foliage at the end of the branches in the following year. (But I had managed to get almost all of the roots as it was in a raised bed).

    Laurel I don't know about I'm afraid.

    Hi gymrat

    Laurel is really tough and can stand transplanting almost any time but autumn is better. If it is large then definitely leave it until the autumn. All it needs is a well dug area with lots of compost and keep it well watered. If you have a choice of sizes then I would suggest that you get something under 3ft high. It is less traumatic for a smaller one to be transplanted and it will establish itself quicker.
