    Hi

I dug up my Solent garlic today – the only thing that's done well this year.

Given it's still quite early, can I split a bulb and sow the individual cloves and hope to get another crop in the autumn?

    Thanks

    Nope!
You can however plant it around late September and over winter it for an earler crop next year

Thank you. I'll store a couple of bulbs for this.

Out of interest - why? is it the time of year or that a fresh bulb needs to dry out?

There simply isn't time for it to bulk up before autumn. Also, the cold weather over winter causes the bulb to divide so if you do it now all you get is one bulb, so not worth it.

Thank you, I'm constantly amazed by garlic (sad I know!)

So if I sow in Autumn when should I expect a crop ?

Well mine are generally ready by mid June but this weather has put them back a month or so!

So you don't gain much then? (planting them in winter...)

They need the cold to help them divide into cloves
