Just got home after a mornings metal detecting, and my feet are frozen,so looking for feedback for some reall warm socks. Suprising really as my boots have thinsulate in them and should be good....but not today.

because my boots are slightly large i wear normal thin socks and thicker ones on top so perhaps i need thin and thick of a warmer type.
Any ideas for good makes welcome.

A good place to look for warm socks, believe it or not, Howard, is a good Fishing Tackle Shop as today's Winter Angler has the best warm gear ever.:D

That's where I get my loop stitch lined mainly wool walking socks from, and they're cheaper than from the walking shop and I can get them in plain colours (I hate modern multi-coloured patterned walking socks).

          warm socks

When working out side in cold weather, I get a pair of the OH Tights and put them under my jeans and socks

          but don't tell any one

Jiffy, years ago a fishing mate used his wifes brand new tights, under his pants, and all in one, trouble is he wanted a pee,so had to rip the crutch to bits to do so.............his wife wernt happy.:cry3:

Myself. Got a brand new striped thermal top and pants,i look like a convict when dressing........keeps me warm, but feet like blocks of ice.

On the island we have a shop that supplies the yacht/boating people (used to be called a chandler) they still supply that sort of thing. Have you got one near you - you could try? :)

You can buy thermal socks (and/or insoles) of course, but if you Google 'Silvermans', you'll find they sell 'Arctic Socks' (about £10) which are the sort issued to marine commandos for use ..... well, in the arctic!

What you need is a pair of Skeetec boots, as an angler you will have heard of them. Nice thick soles and a removable fleece lined inner. The extra thick soles stop the cold penetrating the boot so quickly as standard boots, the liner is another layer of cold protection.

I use mine with 2 pairs of socks so then have four layers of protection against the cold. End result is toastie warm feet.

Primark are selling knee-socks in a fluffy, sparkly eyelash type yarn. They make you look as thought you've got elephantiasis but don't think they can be beat for warmth to cost ratio. Bit girly for all you manly huntin' shootin' and fishin' types, though!

:heehee::heehee::heehee:, Madahhlia, bit late for that as some people have already "confessed" to wearing tights to keep warm when fishing. Which is probably where the saying "tight lines" comes from.:heehee::heehee::loll::D
