    Hi all,

Just thought i would pass this recipe on which was from my neighbour, he says it really works!
Boil 2 cloves of garlic in 2 pints of water, drain then put 2 teaspoons of the liquid in one gallon of water in a watering can, and treat every 2 weeks. I tried it yesterday so will see if it works, my neighbour said there was no more slime in his garden.

I might give that a go. Doesn't it make the whole garden smell of garlic though?

I gave up due to the stench .... very vile in a hot country .... :euw:

I've been putting small mounds of bran down and that seems to be working well. Evidently, the bran is so yummy to the slugs, they literally eat themselves to death :euw: and I don't have to worry about pets or garden birds having a nibble.

As you say the smell from the garlic is bad because you are in a hot country Victoria, but honestly it has been hot here, but i haven't found it that strong at all, remember it is only 2 teaspoons in a gallon of water, so it is very weak.

Lmrr dahlia was stripped by snails or slugs before spraying recipe on, the other dahlia next to it which had been sprayed as not been touched, my busy lizzies are okay too, but will still keep my eye on other plants for you.

You will never get rid of the slug problem. The idea that a suggested recipe from a friend posted on a website is suddenly going to solve a problem that has plagued gardeners for many years is absurd. What you can do is accept the facts of nature - that slugs also have a right to live, that a harmonious balance can be struck, and that various organic and cruelty free materials canbe devised and bought to deter slugs. These creatures are beneficial to nature in the wider sense, and help to cycle organic matter, as well as providing food for a large array of other animals. As humans, we have muscled in at a later stage with our domestic gardens and simply have to accept our place in the cycle instead of trying to kill everything which gets in our way.

ooooooooooooo i have heard oif this remedy, but have never got round to trying it. apparently slugs and snails have taste receptors in their feet, so they taste the garlic-yuk!

also i have heard of putting vaseline around pots to stop slugs/snails getitng up to the plants. :thmb:

personally if i get a hold of them, they get fed to my chooks!

I know I've mentioned this before in other threads. But its beer, cheap beer. Pour some cheap beer in a saucer, put on ground, slugs and snails are drawn to it, they go into the beer and drown, when full, throw out and fill again.
So in this way, your getting them out of your garden.
