    Hello everyone,

Have just made a new border beside my brick wall and want to cover it with a climbing rose. The main reason obviously is to keep intruders out, so the plant will need to have lots of thorns. It needs to cover a large area of the wall also, so will need to be a big plant. Haven't really decided on a colour, I was hoping for a white open type of rose, like rosa cupid, but will consider any other colours too.

    Thank you in advance

Can think of lots of very large climbers Madame Alfred Carriere but I can't think of any with lots of thorns!!!

Hi Jane. Morning Jewel is a beatiful pink climbing rose which will cover a lot of space. It repeat flowers (all summer) and is beautifully scented. It has the usuak usual amount of thorns. It stands great in a vase too.

Hi Jane what direction does the wall face and is it a Climber or a Rambler you want:)

I can only recommend these without knowing the exact location,Sun/Shade/etc:)

1.Kiftsgate and 2.Seagull in no particular preference:)

    Burglar proof
    Rosa sericea pteracantha/Very thorny

The wall is west facing, thats where I intend to plant it at least. I would like it to cover that wall and the wall next to it which faces south. I am not worried if it's a climber or a rambler, just as long as its quite large and can cover roughly 3-5 metres of wall, I'm quite happy.

Thanks for everyones help so far.

Hi Jane If it were me I would go for a Rambling Rector or Kiftsgate but that is only my own personal opinion:)

Hi Jane i agree with Wiseoldowl (Rambling Rector). Climbing rose, dense twiggy growth with a cream/white flower, very fragrant can climb trees, pergolas or can form a dense shrub. very versatile.

Think I will go for the Rambling Rector. I quite like the name. But must ask does it have a lot of thorns and will it be ok in quite boggy clay soil? I intend to buy it as a bare root too, would this be a problem with my boggy soil?
