Hi, I've cut a hole out of the bottom of a planter and slid it down my parasol, see the photos.

I'm looking at putting a climbing plant, so I can train it to go up the parasol. But it's going to be very shady under the parasol and I need a plant that will survive in that environment.

Can anybody give me some suggestions.

    Regards,
    Nick.

Hi Nick, what a novel idea! I cannot at the moment think of anything suitable to climb up that will cope with shade but maybe someone else can be more helpful. It's a shame as Morning Glory would look fab but I think it needs full sun.

I have one concern - is that parasol pole going to end in the planter, or does it go through a table? I can imagine it blowing over!!

As Kathy3 rightly says, Nick, what happens when you close the brolly ... or perhaps you don't intend to?

My orange Honeysuckle grows in total shade and has done for years.

As you like veg, why not tumbling tomatoes out of the pot, surely some sun would get to it?

Hi, yes the parosol does go right through the pot to the floor. Also I plan on keeping it open full time.

I was thinking of Tomatoes but don't they need to be kept in a greenhouse or somewhere warm.

    Morning Nicky

I grew tumbling tomatoes in a hanging basket when I lived in Bucks in the late 90s. I think it is a popular concept still, so I don't believe a greenhouse is necessary, especially for small tomatoes.

You could also use ivy to climb the pole, but Honeysuckle would give a scent as well (not the orange one which is unscented).

Look forward to seeing what you do.

Maybe try Canary Creeper. I grow it agagainst a North-facing fence and it seems quite happy there. Watch out for the "Cabbage Whites" [IMG]

I dont think a climber is a viable propostion, bearing in mind most climb in order to find the sun, in this case the higher they go the shadier it will be.
Hows about just some upright bedding plants that only grow a foot or so.

It has to be something that doesn't attract bees, if you don't want them to end up in your drinks...
I would go for some artificial plant.

Its funny you mention an artificial plant...me and mr pod were looking for the very same thing for our bathroom. We have one of those velux windows in the roof set very very high, and were looking for realistic-ish tumbling plants for the high shelf set in the ceiling. We couldnt find anything anywhere. Guess more and more people have been bitten by the gardening bug and everyone wants the real thing these days :)
