    Good evening everyone,

We are looking for a climbing rose to plant at the edge of our pergola/screen feature surrounding a patio. Ideally it will grown up the post and onto and along the top of the small beams (see attached pic).

Would Madame Alfred Carrier be suitable? If not can you recommend another rose? We don't want to cover too much of the cedar panel as we like the look. Mainly looking for something to grow along the tope of the beams etc.

Slightly acidic clay-y soil. West/South West facing.

    Many thanks,

    Ed

I planted a Phyllis Bide on an arch last year so this year was its first with us. It grew about 7 feet and flowered quite profusely. The blooms are on the small side, in clusters, not much scent, but it’s quite charming. It’s said to be a rambler really but not too vigorous.

Mme Alfred is a big girl, in my garden at least. She is very pretty but headstrong. I’d say she’s at least 7 metres tall/long and would swamp your fence in no time.

A completely different colour, but a beautiful one, is provided by Maigold. Maigold (or May gold) begins to throw out lovely soft apricot yellow perfumed flowers in, not surprisingly, May. The flowers continue into the autumn. I’ve just pruned mine back ready for the winter storms and I got a little vase of buds and flowers for the kitchen. Thorny, yes. But only about 3 metres tall and quite slim.

Mdme AC is a beautiful rose and and will easily give you the length along the top beam. Ours established a 3-4m high framework of main stems very quickly. She does need proper pruning to control as she quicklys grow 2m long side shoots each season how r hard back they were cut to begin with. Lots of flower power but she does run toward the sun but as you want to get the beams covered and not the cedar panel that could work well for you

Yes I was thinking Madame Carriere might be too big. Thanks for the suggestions. We were thinking of white/pale colours. We are thinking about having Salvia nemerosa surrounding the patio too so something that goes with that, colour wise.

Anyone have any experience with Wollerton Old Hall? Looks nice on the David Austin site and is a little smaller so looks like would climb up the left post and a meter or so over the top.

Monty Don on Gardeners World has just replaced his Mme Alfred with Wollerton Old Hall. Mme Alfred was too tall.

Ahh excellent! Yes I remember seeing this and just watched it again. I think I’ll try it.

            Thanks for the help everyone.
