Red Ants

Hi, My mother says she has a red ants nest under the lawn can anything be done to get rid of them if so how?

 

You can buy ant killer, they take it back to the nest and it kills them all.

I got bitten by a red ant today whilst doing some weeding, and it stings quite a bit! nothing like a wasp sting though, more like a nettle sting.

Are they causing a problem though?
