Hiya appreciate if anyone can advise, I have never grown any vegetales before. I was given a red cabbage small plant a few leaves on it and approx one foot tall. I'm unsure as to how deep to plant, I planted in a trough about 6/8 inches in depth, seems really leggy to me.
    Any suggestions?

It doesn't sound like the best of plants to me Carl but if you're determined to persevere with it
Push it hard into the soil, they like to be really firm
    Earth up round about it
You can even give it a little stake if it's rocking about.
Hopefully you'll get at least a small cabbage in time.

I'm hard hearted Hannah - well I try to be. I put the runts on the compost heap. Well I'm quite a softy really - I get my husband to do it for me.

    Hi Carl

I agree with Alice. If your cabbage plant is 12 inches high but only has a few leaves, the chances of it growing into a reasonable cabbage are pretty slim. I'd be inclined to chuck it into your compost bin and start again. Plenty of sturdy little cabbage plants still around and it's not too late to sow your own seed either.

My Brassicas always grow far too long an initial stem - I just plant them deep up to the first leaves that are NOT on the leggy stem, and go from there. A foot is a lot though ... but worth "deep" planting I reckon.
