On my red cordilines the leaves on the very bottom of the stem are really sagging and look just about dead compared to the rest would it be ok if i removed them and which would be the best way. advice appreciated

This is my first red cordyline and have the same condition (which I think is normal), don't know if it's the correct thing to do, but I just give each decaying leaf a gentle tug, and if it don't come off then I leave it a bit longer.

Robbo, you could cut the leaves off an inch from the stem as pulling them off may expose non woody stem tissue which can lead to more problems. You could give a tug but look at the stem and check that it's not white(unripe). Cordyline lower leaves do tend to go brown and drop in winter sometimes hanging on untill they are pulled off . It should put some growth on from now so don't worry about the lower leaves, it is natural. [IMG]

I cut mine off with secateurs close to the stem if they look ragged but wont tear off easily.
The leaf base dies and falls off eventually of its own accord.

I do as Pete does, and things have gone ok - but I appreciate what Strongy says - makes sense.
