I would hazard a guess that your red ivy is not ivy but Virginia Creeper

If so - it grows fast, loves the sun and loses its leaves in the winter. Ivy retains its leaves throughout the winter as it is an evergreen

I'm with Hornbeam, def sounds more like V.Creeper. Very impressive at this time of year but bare in winter

If you look at the base of your creeper, there should be lots of 'runners', these should detach quite easily and should have roots already on them .....I have in the past pust these roots in water for a couple of days and then planted, with good results..... remember that the berries on VC are highly toxic... also our climate is extremely dry and hot for at least 8 months of the year and has never had any problems ..ours covers the cottage walls, grows like fury and has to be "trimmed" twice yearly M-L
